Have You Played... Dark Souls 2?

A wild ride It’s easy to placeDark Souls 2in your crosshairs and take aim at its differences. Its map doesn’t intertwine likeDark Souls1 or 3. Lots of bosses do that thing where they summon in some mates and it’s quite annoying. The atmosphere lacked that magic glaze. And yet, its quirks and frustrations make it one of my favourites. The DLCs elevate the game’s status as a concept album, whisking you off to three forgotten kingdoms to reclaim crowns from ice-blasted cities and sunken Aztec-inspired temples....

Lunistice is a Saturn-inspired indie platformer with Sonic speed, out now

A game developed by A Grumpy Fox (no, really) Lunisticeis a 3D platformer inspired by the PSX/Sega Saturn era, but its high-speed movement reminds me of Sonic’s 3D adventures, in a good way. Out today on PC and Switch, it was originally developed by solo dev A Grumpy Fox as a small 30-day project, but it quickly ballooned into something larger. It’s now been over a year since A Grumpy Fox first started work on the game, but I think you can agree from the announcement trailer below, it’s been time well spent....

Pepper Grinder is a fab-looking pixel platformer about drilling and grappling

I’ve been eagerly anticipatingPepper Grindersince I saw a series of tweets with GIFs several years ago. It’s a pixel platformer in which the protagonist, Pepper, has a drill which she uses to plow through scenery, and a grappling hook for all the moments when she’s not underground. It’s now been officially announced with Devolver as publisher and there’s a reveal trailer below. It’s quite satisfying to watch a game go from “oh, that GIF features a neat mechanic” to “oh, it’s a proper game now with levels and giants and several enemy types and weapons and other game bits....

Tactics Ogre: Reborn review: a 90s strategy classic that still holds up today

Say what you will about Square Enix’s ill-fated ventures into NFTs and mildly embarrassing follies with live service games recently. Their commitment to remaking, remastering and generally sprucing up their ageing back catalogue from decades past is an admirable one in my eyes, even if they are making you pay through the nose for them almost every single time. As we all know, though, some have made more successful transitions than others....
