Dr. Fetus' Mean Meat Machine releases this year Everyone’s favourite squishy heroSuper Meat Boyis back, but not in the brutally-fast-platforming way you might expect. Team Meat have announced Dr. Fetus’ Mean Meat Machine, a match-four tile puzzler that follows Meat Boy’s archnemesis as he attempts to cook up the perfect Meat Boy clone. You might notice that some of the meat clones look notably unlike our Meat Boy, hence the deadly Tetris test chambers....

And it’s hitting early access on September 12th Earlier this month, Paradox revealedLife By You, a competitor toThe Simsled by former EA exec Rod Humble. We only received a snappy 50-second tease of some environments and our non-Sims avatars, but Paradox have now shown more of their life-sim via alive stream, calling it “the most moddable and open life simulator.” We now know that Life By You will have an open world, a dialogue system, a third person-mode, and it’ll release into early access on September 12th....

Storyteller still looks fascinating I first playedStorytelleraround eleven years ago, which is also thefirst time RPS wrote about it. It was a story-building puzzle game in which players constructed three-panel comics by dragging and dropping characters and items such that they combined in delightful, dramatic ways. It looks to still be that, more or less, now that it’s coming out in greatly expanded and polished form next week. Watch the launch trailer below....

Server hotfixes have already been deployed Diablo 4’s pre-order beta is underway. That means people who have already paid for the hack-and-slash sequel are currently enjoying the quintessential modern Diablo experience: queuing to play for hours and being spontaneously disconnected should they manage to enjoy a few moments smashing monsters. Blizzard saying they’re tracking the issues and, as of a couple of hours ago, say that they’ve applied fixes that have improved wait times....

It just received a major update InGarden Galaxy, you arrange randomly delivered pots, plants, furniture and ornaments into your own happy little scene. I spent a contented evening with it a few weeks ago, fussing over the shape of my water feature and the angle of my gnome. If you like tinkering and tidying, I think you’d like it too, and this week it has received a major new update with lots more items to play with....

No one here fights like a cow Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crewis the upcoming game from the makers ofDesperados 3and Shadow Tactics, which is another way of saying it’s one of the most exciting games currently in development. Mimimi recently released a new “developer insight” video which introduces more of the magic pirate sneak ‘em up’s systems, world, and playable characters. It’s a terrible cliché to describe a setting as “a character”, and so I winced a little when they described Shadow Gambit’s home pirate ship, Red Marley, as “one of the main characters in the game....

The free, community-made mod arrives on Steam Back in January, the makers behind the excellentHalf-Life 2VR mod announced they weremoving onto making a virtual reality goggle version ofHalf-Life 2: Episode One- and we now know it will be arriving onSteamlater today. What’s more, we also have a release date for their VR mod of Episode Two. That will come next month on April 6th, according to itsSteampage. You’ll need to own the original versions of Half-Life 2: Episode One andHalf-Life 2: Episode Twoon Steam in order to take advantage of the mods, but the mods themselves cost nothing to download - although you can support the Source VR Mod Team developers onKo-Fito say thank you for their efforts....

The complete picture unveiled at last I recently sat in on an early preview presentation of Layers Of Fear, chatting with creative director Damian Kocurek. Listeners to one very specific episode of theEWS podcastmight recall that I’m something of a Layers Of Fear lore theorist, so of course I was delighted to nerd out over what this new(ish) game is all about. Bingo Six years after the events of Raccoon City, government agent and nice-jacket-liker Leon S. Kennedy is dispatched to the Spanish countryside to investigate the disappearance of the President’s daughter Ashley Graham. Cursed to never have a day at the office that won’t add another decade onto his time in therapy, Leon quickly discovers that the local population have been infected with a parasite administered by a sinister cult that makes their guts all wiggly....

As with previous Time Capsules, these aren’t necessarily the definitive best games of the year we’ve picked. Rather, they’re the games we hold dear to our hearts, and those that (hopefully) hold some important lesson that’s worth preserving for the game developers of the future. We’re including games based on the year they came out on PC, and ideally, it’s this particular version of the game we’re recommending (even if you technically can’t physically buy that in any actual storefront anymore)....
