Wrath: Aeon Of Ruin review: sometimes the old FPS ways can still work

The sleeper has aquakened I’ve had to look up…. goddamn it, hang on. I’ve had to look upWrath Colon Aeon Of Ruinevery day to remember its utter nothing of a name. Such a weak title deserves a much worse game, but this captures the feeling of its late 90sFPSinfluences as they actually were, and ends up just familiar enough to work, and just original enough to refresh the formula. At times, it’s a littletooaccurate, but even with its annoyances dialled up by the pressure of playing it too hard for the sake of review, I’m impressed with the balancing act it’s struck....

Age Of Mythology Retold tilts for the modern esports crowd with changed god power mechanics

A smattering of new info on the forthcoming Age retelling When I did my undergrad degree in the nowadays-blissful-seeming early noughties, I swore off videogames entirely. I sternly and sorrowfully turned my back on such hit releases asShadow of the Colossus,Far Cryand yes, even, that PC gaming essentialHalf-Life 2, so as to spend 11-hour days boning up on Aeschylus and Samuel Johnson. Then, two weeks before my final exams, I somehow went out and bought Ensemble’sAge Of Mythology....

Balatro's creator has barely played other deckbuilders, and thinks that's partly why it succeeded

Spared genericism The roguelikelike deck-building poker gameBalatrois frankly the only game I care for right now. My head fizzes with ideas for fiendish combos and deeply illegal hands. I’m delighted by its deserved success, with the makers boasting that it sold enough to become profitable within one hour then sold 250,000 copies in 72 hours. In a recent interview, the developer claims that part of why it’s so damn successful is because they’ve barely played other roguelikelike deckbuilders so it’s free to do its own thing outside genre conventions....

Giving Rainbow Six: Siege a sequel or new engine could doom it, says creative director

“You see games that did go through sequels and just completely drop the ball” Rainbow Six Siege’s creative director Alexander Karpazis doesn’t believe the elderly shooter needs a change of game engine or for that matter, a sequel. He feels that Siege can “last forever”, adding that “I’m not going to name names, but you see games go through sequels and just completely drop the ball.” Rainbow Six Siege isn’t exactly a spring chicken - it’s nine years old now - and is often targeted by folks who think it’s a buggy mess that needs a massive upgrade....

Nightingale's great hope is the city hidden at its foggy heart

Inflexion share plans for the urban side of their survival sim Sometimes I wonder whether every genre fantasyRPGor RPG-inflected game is essentially a journey towards the Big City. Most such games start you off on the periphery of the world, out in the sleepy and/or brutish hamlets of FirstActShire, Chosen One County, and send you on a loose quest towards the cosmopolitan centre, where you’ll typically learn about the ultimate villain of the piece, gain access to the juiciest concentration of shops, crafting facilities and quest-givers, and glean some hint at the location of the endgame dungeon....
