It may be hard to believe that a Bard - whose focus is on song, dance, poetry, and performance - might be a notable hero in their own right. However, Bards bring an incredible number of strengths to team composition, as long as players properly develop their abilities.

Bards begin the game with two cantrips, two Level 2 spell slots, and a special action calledBardic Inspirationthat adds a 1d6 bonus to player attack rolls, ability checks, and saving throws.

At Level 3, Bards can choose from one of the following three Bard Colleges.

Your race, background, and chosen skills can grant you additional actions and passive effects that strengthen your character. Here are our picks for the best Bard build.

The best Bard race is High Elf.

TheHigh Elfrace grantsDarkvisionand an extracantrip. Darkvision lets you see in darkness and in dim light as if it were dim light and bright light, respectively. You’ll be able to choose any cantrip from the Wizard spell list, and selecting the Half-Elf race also grantsPerceptionproficiency, so you can discover hidden items and objects in the world around you.

The best Bard background is Entertainer.

Entertainergrants skills inAcrobaticsandPerformance. Acrobatics allows you to attempt to stay on your feet in tricky situations that require balance, such as walking on ice or across beams. Meanwhile, Performance allows you to delight an audience with entertainment.

The best Bard skill proficiencies are Deception, Sleight of Hand, and Persuasion.
