People should remember where the Game Awards came from by watching the 2007 Spike Video Game Awards

This year’s Game Awards ceremony garnereda lot of justified criticismfor the way it rushed winning developers off stage in favour of adverts, rambling conversations with Hideo Kojima, and celebrity cameos from the likes of Timothée Chalamet. Obsidian’s Josh Sawyer was right when he called it an “embarrassing indictment of a segment of the industry desperate for validation via star power”. Yet I still can’t help but also see the Game Awards as something else: a sign of progress....

Steam's Best Of 2023 charts the year's best sellers and most played

Being good seems to lead to more sales There are also filters to view just early access, VR or Steam Deck games. The RPS Selection Box: Jeremy's bonus games of the year 2023

A bunch of unusual indie stuff Kowloon’s Curse: Lost Report I have some issues with how Kowloon’s Curse: Lost Report - and by extension the Japanese adventure games that inspired it - use Kowloon for window dressing. Kowloon Walled City was a very real place where Hongkongers lived very real lives, and this game, which was primarily made by a dev from the Netherlands, somewhat appropriates elements of the city for what amounts to an aesthetic that’s part cyberpunk, part vaporwave, and occasionally more reminiscent of Japan than Hong Kong....

Our favourite RPS features from 2023

There are a lot Sin, who writes our Scout Report supporter series and our strategy-gaming focused The Rally Point, is very good, and you should read all her articles, but I really enjoyed this, from the start of the year, assessing whereDwarf Fortressin its new context after its second release. It was always a pleasure to edit Liam (RPS in peace)’s work whenever he wasn’t doing a video, and I loved his assessment of the Ishimura as a place that people lived and worked in rather than a video game level....

Popular Slay The Spire mod Downfall was hijacked to spread malware through Steam

The malware was designed to steal passwords Slay The Spiremod Downfall suffered a “security breach” on Christmas day which allowed hackers to distribute malware through Steam, the developers of the mod say. Affected users would have seen a “Unity library installer popup” upon launching Downfall during the hijack.
